Playing It By Ear

PLAYING IT BY EAR stimulates active radio listening. Artists from around the world who use sound as their medium of expression contributed by mail or collaborated in the studio. The pieces were used in whole or in part, alone or multi-tracked, always looking to augment the aural implications of the individual's work; intertwining the pieces into a continuous soundscape construction, a unique radio experience.
PLAYING IT BY EAR was a non-profit radio series produced in 1984 by Alejandro Gutiérrez and Tom Spencer in cooperation with WCVF - AM/FM and the Communication/Media department of the SUNY College at Fredonia. The second season of programs was funded in part by a grant from the Fund for the Arts in Chautauqua County, which is managed by the Arts Council for Chautauqua County.
PLAYING IT BY EAR was aired on its flagship station WCVF, 88.9 FM, Fredonia, NY, USA; and internationally on Radio Centraal, 101.6 FM, BELGIUM; 3RRR-FM, Melbourne, and 2MBS-FM, Sydney, AUSTRALIA. According to a contemporaneous Australian radio survey, 3RRR-FM was the #1 listened to public radio station on that continent, with an estimated 323,000 listeners. 2MBS-FM had an estimated audience of 78,000.

YOU CAN HEAR THE FIRST EIGHT EPISODES HERE. IN CELEBRATION OF THE 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY SINCE ITS PRODUCTION, I HAVE RE-MASTERED AND POSTED THE REMAINING 6 EPISODES HERE.

"The whole tape has that elusive, hard-to-put-your-finger-on-what-genre-this-is quality about it, which I love. It's not at all 'New Age', more New Space Age Music, and it is all interesting and fresh, but not mindless, (like New Age), or disturbed (like Industrial). Very well put together." -- John Wiggins, producer/composer

"A wonderful package ... an excellent production." -- Randy Greif, composer/performer

"Really enjoyable stuff, I've listened to them a lot lately. You did a nice job on them. Normally I'm not too wild about people taking artistic liberties with my music, but you did everything tastefully and it worked very well." -- Ron Slabe, composer

"A fine job putting the programs together." -- Norbert L. Oldani, MVCC professor

"Super radio shows. I am honored to be included." -- Donald Campau, composer

"Simply Marvelous. Your broadcasts do, indeed, place radio in the foreground." -- Rod Collins, IBS VP

"Excellent mixed poetry and music." -- Sandy Nys, Radio Centraal in Belgium
